Two pedestrians struck and killed by SUV in South Florida

There are numerous things that drivers must pay attention to while traveling on the roadways. While it is important to pay attention to their own driving habits such as speed, maintaining a lane and following road signs, it is equally as important to be aware of their surroundings. Taking notice of other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians is important. Failing to take such precautions could mean a serious or even fatal collision.

The Florida Highway Patrol recently responded to a fatal pedestrian accident on Alligator Alley. The crash involved two pedestrians and an SUV and occurred around 10 p.m. near mile marker 63 on Interstate-75. According to preliminary reports, the two pedestrians had been walking near the interstate because their vehicle ran out of fuel. The two walked on the grass median on the interstate, and when they attempted to cross the road, an SUV traveling eastbound was unable to stop and collided with both pedestrians.

Both pedestrians died as a result of the crash. No injuries were reported to the driver or their passenger. Investigation is still ongoing and no citations have been issued at this time. It is not clear at this time if the driver was speeding or distracted at the time of the crash.

Even if both parties contributed to the crash, the driver of the vehicle could endure civil liabilities for contributory negligence. The loved ones of the deceased pedestrians could file a wrongful death claim. Following the death of a loved one, family members often endure various costs. Filing for compensation could cover costs such as medical bills, funeral costs and other damages.

A fatal accident could happen suddenly and could impact numerous people. In these matters it is crucial to be well informed of their options so they can take appropriate actions. Seeking advice about these options would also ensure they are taking the right steps and their rights are protected.
